Action on Fistula Project

In 2014 DOM received a grant to implement a 3 year project to support women with obstetric fistula to regain their dignity through surgical repair. This grant is from the Fistula Foundation and Disciples of Mercy is one of the nominated outreach partners with the mandate of social mobilization to increase the uptake of obstetric fistula services within 3 counties. These include Homabay, Migori, and Kisumu counties. DOM is in its third year of implementation of the project with about 100 women successfully repaired.2017-05-04 094818 - DSC_0249_ENT

DOM employed a number of mobilization strategies to reach out their target audience. The strategies included the use of media, partnering with social institutions such as churches and schools, and working with the hard to reach rural health facilities. The Community Health Volunteers are key to the strategy of reaching these women since they are the community gate keepers in terms of community health care provisions. The CHVs play a vital role in the identification and referral of women with obstetric fistula for services at the various treatment network centers. DOM provides free transport to all women with obstetric fistula.

Many cases have been successful because of the intervention of the Action on Fistula Program.
